Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785-1859) served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1824 to 1830. In that capacity he commissioned and collected portraits of Native Americans for his Gallery in the War Department. McKenneys goal was to publish a record of vanishing peoples: portraits, biographical sketches and a history of North American Indians. James Hall (1793-1868) provided the text to that publication in 1838. This volume includes many of those portraits with the accompanying descriptions plus a history of McKenney and Hall by James D. Horan. It is a first edition published in 1972 by Crown Publishers, Inc , New York. 12 inches x 9.5 inches x 1 1/4 inches it is in very good vintage condition with minimal shelf wear. It has has a few small stains on the bottom of the pages and they have yellowed a little over the decades, but they are otherwise clean and the lithographs are simply beautiful. Please see photos for details.
